About Skilled Concepts

Skilled Concepts was founded to help address gaps between clinical treatment and continuous personal development. Most programs and therapists default to one singular approach (e.g. Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Psychodynamic) to address clients’ needs. Single approach treatment is the norm because they’re “safe” (total abstinence) and backed by evidence (efficacy).

The problem is that the evidence and approaches became stale as our clients progressed through life, technology evolved, and careers became more competitive.  This caused constraints within the helping field:

Time: single hour weekly sessions in addition to groups. Missed sessions impact the counselor and the clients who must rearrange care and “double up” the following week.

Access: people are busier than ever and unable to show up in person consistently without sacrific. Macro goals become seemingly unattainable when this happens.

Cost: insurance will cover stale approaches, then drop coverage for a person who repeated the same behavior that got them into care in the first place (make it make sense!).

There was never a space for non-traditional approaches that include harm-reduction, and solution-focused brief approaches in a convenient format. Skilled Concepts offers options to fill that gap by switching the focus from all -clinical areas to overall goal-achievement that focuses on a commitment to a process, not an appointment.

Of course, if you’re in need of therapy to do the deeper work, and address underlying issues, and trauma, then that’s where you should be. There will always be a place for traditional therapy (and I will always be a counselor!).

As the bonus child of an addict, I discovered my passion for helping others in 2005 while working for a Drug Court program. That experience set me on the path to becoming a Certified Associate Counselor.

While I’ve always been committed to supporting individuals battling addiction, I’ve also devoted a significant part of my career to “helping the helper” through training, coaching and professional development. Much of my work has centered on designing and facilitating training workshops for behavioral health and human resources professionals. I also bring experience in wellness program development and have led Critical Incident Response Teams (CIRT) across multiple federal law enforcement agencies. I'm grateful to you for allowing me on your personal journey.

I’m a proud Maryland native who enjoys reading, practicing yoga, and traveling with my daughter whenever I can.
