Why High Functioning Professionals Struggle with Habit Change
I've learned to "practice what I preach". Most high functioning leaders do not realize how many of their daily habits quietly drain their capacity. They assume the problem is stress or they assume the problem is workload, and those explanations feel easier to accept than looking at the patterns that run beneath the surface.
What they rarely consider is that the real issue is the set of coping habits they have built over time, habits that feel normal and even deserved after a long day because they provide a sense of relief that seems harmless in the moment.
These habits feel earned and they feel comforting ever thought to yourself “congratulations for completing a full day of adulting, you deserve a drink”? This thinking slowly erodes clarity, energy, and emotional stability in ways that are easy to overlook until the consequences become impossible to ignore.
High performers are used to being capable and being the person who figures things out. They are used to being the one who holds everything together. This creates a specific challenge. When they struggle with unhealthy habits, they feel ashamed. They think they should be able to fix it on their own. They think needing help means they are failing.
This belief keeps them stuck.
The Real Issue: Coping Habits That Feel Normal

Most people do not think of habits as the root cause of their stress or depletion. They think of habits as small behaviors that sit on the surface of their life. But habits are the foundation of how you function. They determine your energy, your clarity, your emotional stability, and your ability to lead yourself.
The habits that drain people the most are often the ones they defend the hardest. They say things like:
“I only drink to relax.”
“I work better under pressure.”
These statements feel true because the habits feel familiar. But familiarity is not the same as effectiveness, and the statements are B.S. once you lose control.

Why I Created Upskilled
I've gone through burnout from a lack of work/life balance. As a new supervisor, I was always "on" and didn't know how to navigate changes that well, and the overwhelm was hard at the time. The crazy thing is, I started seeing myself in the clients who were drinking excessively to cope, but I wasn’t drinking. I was in trouble, though.
Eventually I reached a point where my internal capacity was depleted as I was also managing my attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I had pushed myself through a long season of pressure, responsibility, and emotional load, and I found myself on the edge of burnout.
If I were a general counselor, or a social worker (shout out to my behavioral health brethren!) I may have picked up on it sooner, but when we’re so close to something, we miss the signs we’re trained to look for-I didn’t have an addiction, but I did have a problem.
I prided myself on making sure my staff and family were taken care of but forgot about taking care of me. My life changed when I started following the advice that I gave clients all the time. I literally started taking better care of myself by tracking my habits, setting intentions, and respecting boundaries I had in place.
I am now on the other side of that experience, but the lesson stayed with me. I realized that if I wanted to live and lead in a sustainable way, I needed to rebuild my internal skill set and to learn how to regulate myself.
As an Alcohol Coach, I help high-performing leaders break unhealthy drinking patterns so they can lead with confidence and elevate their credibility. My coaching business and new podcast, exists to help you see bad habits clearly and replace them with skills that support your life.
This show is for people who are high functioning on the outside but privately depleted on the inside (with or without problem drinking). It is for people who know they are capable of more but don’t have much more to give. It is for people who want to feel steady, clear, and in control again.
Upskilled is the podcast that teaches you the skills you were never given.

What You Will Learn in Upskilled
The skills you’ll learn from each episode are simple, but they are powerful! They help you rebuild your internal capacity so you can function at a high level without relying on unhealthy habits to get through the day. Topics will include sobriety, leadership, and overall well-being.
What Makes Upskilled Different
Upskilled is not motivational. It is not inspirational. It is not filled with stories about pushing harder or doing more. It is practical, evidence based, and direct. It is built for people who do not have time for fluff. It is built for people who want real change and are willing to learn the skills that make that change possible.
Episodes are short. They are focused. They are designed to fit into a full life, just like my coaching. You will not need to take notes. You will not need to overhaul your life. You will only need a few minutes and willingness to try something different.
Episodes drop bi-weekly on Mondays. If my capacity increases, I’ll try recording weekly. See what I did there? 😜
The first episode sets the foundation for my coaching style and everything that follows. Future episodes will focus on healthy coping skills that you can implement immediately to become a better leader at work and at home.
I’d be honored if you subscribed so you don't miss an episode, and left a review, if you’re feeling generous. See you in the next episode right here: Upskilled
